SPOOKY SCENT LAB 👻 A Hands-On Essential Oil Science Adventure for Kids

Turn essential oils into a hands-on science lesson your kids will actually be excited to do! Spooky Scent Lab is a printable homeschool activity that combines aromatic plants, sensory science, simple chemistry, observation, experimentation, and creativity...all with a fun spooky-season theme.

Your child begins as a Scent Detective, investigating four mystery essential oils using only their nose and observation skills. They’ll describe and compare aromas, make predictions, record their findings, guess which plants the scents came from, and then reveal the real plants behind each mystery. Along the way, they’ll discover that essential oils can come from different plant parts....including peels, leaves, flowers, and wood. 

Next, it’s time for some real science! Kids conduct a Spooky Solubility Lab to investigate what happens when essential oil meets water versus a carrier oil. They’ll make a prediction, conduct the experiment, record their observations, and get an age-friendly introduction to concepts like solubility and hydrophobic compounds (including why simply adding essential oil to water does not truly dilute it)

Then they become an Aroma Artist! Children learn about top, middle, and base notes before experimenting with scent combinations and simple ratios. Instead of being handed a recipe to copy, they get to use what they’ve learned to develop, name, and record an original aroma of their own. 

Throughout the lab, children practice observation, prediction, comparison, classification, descriptive vocabulary, botanical science, introductory chemistry, ratios, data recording, sensory exploration, and creative thinking. The included parent guide explains what your child is learning along the way, and a vocabulary section helps families introduce real science and aromatherapy terminology without turning the activity into a test. 

The lab uses Lemon, Cedarwood (Cedrus atlantica), Roman Chamomile (Chamaemelum nobile), and Spearmint (Mentha spicata) essential oils.
